Last show of April

Today I am packing up the Subaru for a lovely drive tomorrow down to San Diego for this weekend’s Mission Federal ArtWalk.

**Artist plug: I will be on Fir Street, around the corner from Blick Art Supply, tent #717. See you there this weekend! 11-6 each day.**

It is the fourth and final showing of my art this month. What a month it has been! Every show is a wonderful blend of connecting with all sorts of amazing people and the satisfaction of sending off my creations to their new homes. This weekend will be one of my favorites, as I spent 11 years in San Diego, and visited this particular ArtWalk when I was looking for my first apartment in the area. Oh have I changed since then, and it feels like these shows have been part of that journey.

May will bring a little more calm into my life, though some Sundays I will be setting up my tent at the weekly Joshua Tree Arts and Crafts Festival, where the Farmers market is on Saturdays. Half a day, hanging out with locals and tourists, selling a few things here and there, it’s a great way to spend a Sunday morning.

As I am packing my car with paintings and prints, I keep catching the eye of this guy.

He and I have spent some quality time together. Inspired by the quail who peck around the dirt outside my studio window and who’s calls echo throughout the sunsets, his little personality brings me joy every time I look at him. I’ve used him for my newsletter and my new business cards this year, and my favorite description of him was from a British lady at the Indian Wells Art Show. She described him as “cheeky.” I couldn’t agree more.

I’ve been busy putting together my finished art pieces and prints for you folks in San Diego!

Yes it’s true I don’t live in San Diego anymore, but I will be visiting this weekend in order to participate in this year’s Mission Federal ArtWalk in Little Italy near downtown San Diego. I have a great spot on India Street where I will be gazing at Blick Art Supplies.

Come on down Saturday or Sunday to tent #910. Also on that block will be my friends at Scripps Health, who will be letting everyone participate in a huge coloring sheet mural which I designed and inked out.

If I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to you, now is the chance to come by in person and say hello (and then goodbye), all while stocking up on some new art for you walls.

See you this weekend!

What a whirlwind it has been the last month or so. We picked up our life in San Diego, packed it all in boxes on a truck and headed northeast to the little desert community of Joshua Tree, CA. We had been looking for a house here for almost two years and had pretty much given up the search when nothing seemed like a good fit. As some of you may know that when you are searching for something, sometimes you can only find it after you give up the search. So this lovely house popped up on the market and we took a look at it and boom, fast forward to today: new town, new home, new studio, and new perspective.

After I unpack these last remaining boxes and get some art up on these bare walls, I am looking forward to settling into the desert life. Excited to share the things I discover and how this environment will impact my artwork. Good times!

This weekend is the opening of a group show at the Sparks Gallery in downtown San Diego. I have two pieces on display; my large tree painting, “Bend” and a curious piece,”curator.” The theme is “Wandering in the Dream Field” and a professional harpist will be playing during the opening. To attend the opening you must RSVP on their facebook event page here.

With this gallery opening, I am embracing the vulnerability of putting myself out there. Exposing my fears, exposing my thoughts and embracing myself as an artist. A very introspective time; a very healing time. The painting below I just finished today.

Have a great weekend everyone, honor yourself and your feelings.

ArtWalk NTC was a great time, I met some wonderful artists and lovely folks walking around enjoying the art.

Thank you all who stopped by to visit, it was a hot, humid weekend and seeing everyone’s smiling faces made the heat much more tolerable.
A success! Now back to painting.

Qanvas by Quiznos

Yes, that would be Canvas, but with a Q.

I am going to art exhibit thursday evening to see my own artwork, as well as 49 other artists’ work.
The show benefits ArtReach, one of the nonprofits I work for, and is appropriately themed “super heroes,” riding on the start of this years Comic-Con convention in San Diego.

Artists were given a clean, unused Quiznos sandwich wrapper to use as their canvas (hence the Qanvas) and free license to create any super hero image they would like.

Here is a sneak peak at where I started with this project; with a little inspiration from my Great Grandmother Mabel, born in 1881, shown here with my mother and her sister in the mid 50’s. The Qanvas made for a challenging surface to paint on. Can’t say I’ve attempted to paint on a sandwich wrapper before this, but now I have. While challenging, I found it enjoyable to creatively tackle the difficulties, and successfully make this a personal tribute to a family member I never met except through black and white photos.
